Wildflowers
What makes the wildflowers in the meadow grow?
Water from the rain sleep beneath the snow
Sunlight in the morning and the moon’s soft face
that’s what makes the wildflowers bloom in this place
And fragrant the meadowsweet
It’s scent upon the breeze
(I shall love you if I want to
I shall marry if I please)
What makes the river
run down to the sea?
Sweetly falling rain
at the roots of yonder tree
Sunlight in the morning
and the starlight’s tender glow
that’s what makes the river
so sweetly come and go
See the yarrow at the roadside
with its many thousand leaves:
(I shall wound every man
but no man shall harm me)
(I shall love you if I want to
I shall marry if I please)
And oh, the wildflowers grow

King Crow

King Crow
Down by the river where the tall rushes grow
On the edges of the water lives a coal black crow
His beak is black and shiny and the feathers on his wing
They swallow up the sunlight because crow’s the river king
All the other birds that fly
That swing their wings upon the sky
All the other birds below
They all pay duty to the crow
Here by the water the alder tree
Reaches for the ripples where the velvet shadows sleep
Crows nest in the branches and their voices rattle clear
Rising in the evening like a black tide in the air
All the other birds that fly
that swing their wings upon the sky
All the other birds below
They all pay duty to the crow
“Hail, King Crow”
Crow raised his children in wisdom and in cheer
Watching from the branches year after year
Well he sails upon the thermals as solid black as night
Obeys the ripples of the air like fish that swim through light
All the other birds that fly
That swing their wings upon the sky
All the other birds below
They pay their homage to the crow
“Hail, King Crow!”

Down to the River

Down to the River
Little soul where do you wander
Like a breeze upon the meadow grass
With a broken bag of stories
And a sparrow that you can’t surpass
Take your stories back where they belong
Plant them in the air like seeds
When the birds fly they will take your song
And sing it from then highest tree
So you go down to the river like a child
Where the water runs slow
And the reed rise to your shoulders
I see you now
Down below the shadows of the trees
Where the light swings to the water’s edge
In the winnow of the dancing reeds
Little soul now don’t be sad
We’ll mend your broken heart with gold and silver
One day soon your heart will race
Out there with the dipper and the sun upon your face
So you will go down to the river like a child
Where the water running slow
And the reeds rise to your shoulders
I can see you now
Down below the shadow of the trees
Where the light swings amber in the sun
In the winnow of the dancing breeze

Dog Star
River rolls ever onwards
Rippling and shimmering and coveting the starlight
Oxbows and river bends
Marsh grass and dipper wings
Drifting slowly in her arms
Floating in the moss and leaves in a gauzy net of river flies
I follow on the shore feet of clay and muddy paw
through the rushes in the moonlight
Following the dog star

Storm Crow
Waiting for the axe to drop
For the other shoe to fall
There’s a little storm crow in us all
And did you ever wonder why
Even with the bluest sky
Even though the fields are dry
You crave the squall?
Storm crow
Wings of still and a beak of coal
Bringing darkness in the light
Storm crow
Wishing winter in the spring
Filling the day with night
On the margins of the land
On the edges of the sea
By the sedge and in the sand
Do you comfort me?
Show me ice upon my cheek
Tracing patterns in my hair
Drawing feathers in the air
Will you comfort me?
Storm crow
Wings of still and a beak of coal
Bringing darkness in the light
Storm crow
Wishing winter in the spring
Filling the day with night

May Tide
Little one, softly sleep
On the ocean’s throng
For the bluest deep
Beats the clearest drum
Little boat, sailing by
Carries cargo of sky
Takes the night far away
Turns the darkness into day
Gentle arms, hold you tight
In the deep grateful night
They encircle you with light
Like stars caught in the May tide

All the Bees UK
McGee and Partington crossed paths by chance on a lockdown film and TV sync music Zoom course and started working together remotely. Over the next three years, through major grief from much life stuff, McGee and Partington immersed themselves in their new-found collaboration and created the debut, self-titled All the Bees album, which is due for release this winter. ... more
